                                                         Sightseeing

For those who love culture and history, the area of Carrapateira is a real grab bag! 100m from the front door, the guest of ‘O Horizonte finds the local museum of the village with a beautiful glimpse into the history and the culture of the coastal region. Monchique, the highest town in the province,  has already had hot water springs for centuries.

For lovers of the Moorish history of the Algarve (Algarve is a corruption of the Arabic word Al-Gharb meaning ‘The West’) there are nice examples of well-preserved forts in Aljezur and Silves, the former capital of the Moorish province.

The Portuguese history of the voyages of discovery on the other hand, started in Sagres. The fort and the nautical school of Hendrik the Navigator with the mythical cape Sint-Vincent  attract thousands of visitors every year. Other fine examples can be found in the restored hermitage/annex museum of Guadalupe (Raposeira) or the old inner city of Lagos with fortress walls and the oldest slave market in Europe.
